I've been a busy lady this summer programming music over at the Island Cafe, and have barely had a chance to do my own thing! But this long weekend, I'm combining the two! On Monday Sept 2nd I'll play the final night of the Cafe's 2nd annual Long Weekend Arts Fest. Myself and Matthew Bailey are going to debut a bunch of new music that we worked on together over the winter, while he was living down at the coldest end of the island, and we'll also do some reworked versions of old songs. My dear sister Martha will do a fire hoop dance as well (hence the picture). It's going to be a beautiful show, and I'm excited to do some of my own singing! You can get all the info on facebook here.
I've also got some other neat stuff on the horizon. I'll be singing with the ever-beautiful a capella group Soul Sisters Supreme Redux 2.0 (aka Isla Craig, Tamara Lindeman, Daniela Gesundheit, Felicity Williams, and Robin Dann) on Sunday Sept 8th at the Great Hall. We are opening for our good friends Matt Cully and Misha Bower (both of Bruce Peninsula). This will be the release show for their debut album as EONS. More info here.
In the spring I did some recording with Michael Timmins for one of his long-running projects: Scott Garbe's Kennedy Suite – a folk-rock opera about the Kennedy assasination, featuring some amazing Canadian musicians. The Cowboy Junkies are putting together a big live show to showcase the project at the Winter Garden Theatre on November 22nd. Guests will include Sarah Harmer, Jason Collett, Skydiggers, Lee Harvey Osmond, Harlan Pepper, Jessy Bell Smith, Reid Jameison, The Good Family (Bruce and Margaret Good), The Screwed, The Potion Kings and myself! Tickets are now on sale here. It's sure to be an amazing night!
See you soon!

During the past two years, I’ve had my favourite summer job ever – programming the Summer Concert Series at the Island Cafe on Ward’s Island, where I grew up and continue to spend most of my summer time. This job basically consists of booking some of my favourite Toronto musicians to play on an outdoor stage on the Cafe’s garden patio. I get to enjoy a meal with my musical friends, and introduce them to the wonderful Island community.
In response to the success of last summer’s concert series, we decided to expand on the format this year and host our own little festival to showcase the talents and creations of Islanders, Cafe staff, and other Toronto friends. Finally, this labour day weekend, our project is ready for its debut! I’m proud of our little baby! While I’m not performing at the festival, I will be around all weekend, so come visit me!

A few things to share!
I’m excited to be playing some songs at the Summerworks Festival launch party, this Saturday at Mercer Union Gallery. My good friends Marine Dreams will also be playing a set later in the evening! Every year, the Summerworks Festival – which mainly focuses on theatre – programs some of the best Toronto concerts of the summer. I was lucky enough to perform at last year’s fest with Bruce Peninsula. Come to the party, and be the first to hear this summer’s music lineup! The event is happening at Mercer Union (1286 Bloor Street West, at Lansdowne), starts at 8pm, and I play at 9:30, Marine Dreams at 11.
My album NO TALKER has been getting some nice attention in anticipation of the big release party on June 21st at the Cameron House.
Check out Berkeley Place’s nice words here.
Baby Sue’s review is here.
In other news, I also now have three songs tabbed on the internet! The labour of a kind stranger means that you can more easily learn my songs! Here’s the latest tab that came to my attention yesterday – for Passing Cars.
My good friends over at the Broken Speaker shot some nice footage of my performance last month at the King’s College Library in Halifax. Check out these videos of myself, and EONS (Matt Cully of Bruce Peninsula), who I was lucky enough to sing back-up for on our mini-tour!

We’re home from Halifax!
My Bruce Peninsula bandmate Matt Cully (aka EONS) and I went out to the East Coast this past week to play in Halifax. Our show at the King’s College Library was a total trip – a beautiful old building full of amazing things – they were even giving away free books! – and amongst the stacks there was a concert going on! Myself and EONS played with one of our favourite Haligonian bands Nick Everett and Everybody. This was the first time we’d seen Nick with his new band, and they were jaw-drop amazing.
Matt and I took the train to Halifax, but it was a slightly unusual journey because we also performed while we were on it! We were lucky enough to get accepted by a VIA Rail program that provides musicians with free long-haul travel in exchange for performances in the lounge car of the train! We played four times during our two trips, and there was even a singalong to I Can’t Help Falling In Love with You by Elvis. Movie-watching, book-reading, and window-gazing in our sleeper cabin, and breakfast in the dining car filled up the rest of our journey.
Some pictures of Matt and I at Halifax’s harbourside Point Pleasant Park…
